1955 - Action toward founding Lutheran Retirement Home began at a meeting of
the Lutheran Brotherhood at First Lutheran Church.
1957 - Rev. Oscar Mikkelson, President of the Lutheran Retirement Home, was the principal speaker at the meeting of Northwood Chamber of Commerce. He explained the background and development of the project.
1958 - A concert by the Worth County Farm Bureau Rural Women's chorus was given at First Lutheran Church in Northwood. It was a benefit concert for the Retirement Home. |
1958 - Three additional churches joined the Lutheran Retirement Home Corporation bringing the total to eight congregations, The new partners are Northwood Methodist, Emmanuel Lutheran-Grafton, and Bethany Lutheran-Joice. The original five members were First Lutheran, Silver Lake Lutheran, Grace Lutheran, Deer Creek Lutheran-Carpenter and Zion Lutheran-Northwood.
1961 - It was voted to build the first unit, a twenty-two bed wing. Original
plans called for two wings housing forty-four beds.
1961 - Work started on the Retirement Home Project according to Whitney Randall, chairman of the Board of Directors.
1961 - In July, a total of $1,500.00 wind damage occurred to the partially completed Lutheran Retirement Home. The damaging winds blew down six panels of face bricks.
1962 - A financial drive begins for the second wing of LRH. The second wing
is expected to cost $81,000. Sunday, May 20th has been designated as
"Solicitation Day."
1962 - Mrs. Wilford Huso was hired as administrator. She will be in charge of supervising the Home.
1962 - LRH opened with the first resident being Mrs. Mollie Madson. O.K. Storre, of Joice, was the second resident followed by Mrs. Milla Marquardt and Mrs. Florence Ness.
1962 - Dedication day was held with Pastor H.A. Wilke and Whitney Randall,
chairman of the board in charge. More than 400 church members, guests, and
friends attend. Pastor O. Mikkelson, now serving in Japan, was cited for his
work in the early days of the enterprise.
1963 - With $40,000.00 pledged, the LRH is making plans for an extension to the present property. The new wing will house at least eighteen and make the Northwood home one of the finest in the area.
1964 - In October, dedication ceremonies for the South wing was held. James V. Anderson of Minneapolis was the main speaker. The dedication marks the completion of the original plans for the Home. The main building and North wing were dedicated just two years ago.
1975 - Jim Tweeten was hired as administrator. He succeeds Ben Ludvig in that position.
1975 - Construction on an addition to LRH is progressing satisfactorily. With ideal fall weather, the building is expected to be enclosed by winter so finishing work can be completed by spring.
1976 - A hand crafted flag was flown over the U.S. Capital on April 8,1976. Mrs. Eno (Marion) Hendrickson, 85 years old, who crocheted it has a document signed by Senator Charles Grassley, Representative Neal Smith, and by George M. White. Mrs. Hendrickson's room at LRH is adorned with a number of her handcrafted items including a quilt made up of blocks representing the official flowers of each state.
1977 - Gena Borg celebrated her 105th birthday with friends and relatives at LRH. Gena passed away 5 months later. Her long life span covered several eras in the world, national and local history. It began in the Victorian age only 19 years after the first white settler arrived in Worth County and only 14 years after the town of Northwood was established.
1977 - A adopt a grandparent program was established at the LRH by the Girl Scout Troop 291.
1978 - Rock and Roll day at the LRH was held to benefit the cancer crusade. The residents rocked in their rocking chairs, walked with their walkers and rolled in their wheelchairs. They took pledges and raised $110.00.
1978 - Pastor Otto Staehling began his work as chaplain of the Home.
1979 - A program about Norway was give by Scott Thoe at the monthly birthday party. The highlight of the program was many Norwegian pictures.
1979 - Sena Buchanan of Northwood beat the odds by doing the unexpected. In 1910 the life insurance tables were set up with the expectation that no one would be living at age 96. On February 8th, Sena did the unexpected and celebrated her 96th birthday. Sena was given an insurance check for $1437,95. Her original policy was $1000.00 and it accumulated $437.95 interest over the years.
1979 - La Vaun Baken taught basic adult education. She said, "Learning is a life-long process; your quest to learn doesn't stop just because you grow older."
1981 - Approximately 250 people attended a July picnic for the first family picnic. A dinner was served, a band entertained, and the day ended with a church service.
1982 - LRH residents over the age of 90 were honored a "Gay 90's" Party. There were 22 residents over the gae of 90 at the party.
1982 - Con Johnson thrilled the residents of LRH when he gave rides through the fairgrounds in his covered wagon that is reminiscent of a prairie schooner.
1984 - Senator Roger Jepsen is assured of another vote in his campaign for the U.S. Senate. He greeted Sena Buchanan who will be 102, Jepsen visited LRH while in Northwood last week.
1987 - Clarence Breen was honored as a provisional board member and charter member of LRH after 30 years of service.
1989 - An addition to the west side of the Home was built that will include a chapel and other needed area.
1990 - NBC weatherman Willard Scott daily salutes senior citizens from around the country on their 100th birthday. LRH has two residents reaching that milestone -Anna Storre Larson and Jeannie Walswick.
1991 - Jim Tweeten retired in March of 1991. He served as administrator following Ben Ludvig who became ill and was no longer able to continue. At that time there were 84 residents and 87 employees. At that time plans for a 20 Alzheimer's unit was considered but as Tweeten stated at the time of his retirement, "Our board is very alert to the needs of the community and I believe this project will happen in the future."
1991 - John Meyer was hired as administrator.
1992 - Lester Hall celebrated his 98th birthday with a surprise. He found, while opening his presents, a shirt which had 98 - $1.00 bills attached. It was from his oldest granddaughter, Gwendolyn Jacques of Hemmet, California.
1992 - Anna Larson on her 102nd birthday was saluted on NBC by Willard Scott, weatherman on the "Today" Show.
1992 - Over the years LRH has expanded to accommodate more residents and provide more facilities for their enjoyment. An aviary, which is an enclosure for 16 chatting flitting, bright colored birds, was purchased Residents took an immediate interest and became a focal point as soon it was installed.
1992 - Bertrum Bidne and John Meyer were among recipients at the 10th Annual Governor's Volunteer Award held at NIACC. Gov. Terry Branstad presented the award.
1992 - U.S. Congressmen Fred Grandy, Merlin Bartz, and Mary Ellen Miller visited LRH residents John and Annamae Martin. Topics discussed were the impact of the OBRA regulations of the long term care industry.
1992 - Plans were made to build an independent living complex. A walkway will connect the commons area to the east wing of the existing LRH. As stated, "The Board wants to make it known that this is an extension of the homes mission and to provide, with God's guidance, a living environment that promotes our residents well being." Chaplain Al Stoa led the ground breaking, which was held in the chapel due to the snow and cold weather with Curtis Davis and others turning a shovel of earth. Construction began on 14 middle income apartments.
1994 - LRH administrator John Meyer and Northwood resident Bertrum Bidne recently accepted a painting that was presented to the Home of the Governor, Terrace Hill. The painting was donated by Gov. Terry and Chris Branstad and has been autographed by the Governor.
1994 - On Sunday, April 17th, an open house and dedication was held upon the completion of Maple Court apartments.
1995 - Women's Auxiliary of Northwood VFW Our Buddies Post 6779 presented a new Old Glory to LRH administrator John Meyer and flag raiser LeRoy Hanson.
1996 - John And Annamae Martin, LRH residents, celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. Among those to help celebrate were, Anita Martin Monus of Calgary, Alberta and granddaughter Nancy Hengesteg.
1997 - Dedication for Phase II of Maple Court apartments was held on May 4th.
1998 - Northwood Care Center boasts six centenarians. As the world prepares for the next century there aren't many people around who saw the last one. The six that were honored were Jimmy Taylor, Emma Lau, Alma Anderson, Barbara Hanson, Lillie Slattum, and Jane Painter.
1999 - Ron Feurhak was hired as administrator to replace retiring John Meyer.
2001 - Grant Brandon was hired as the new administrator. He was born in Northwood, North Dakota, which was originally settled by early settlers from Northwood, Iowa.
2001 - Anna Schultz received greetings from President George W. Bush on her 100th birthday.
2001- The Breen Center Memory Care Unit is opened.
2006- Opened the Northwood Lutheran Therapy Clinic.
2006- Scott Halbach is hired as Administrator in August.
2007- Construction of our new Assisted Living complex began in June.
2008- Grand opening of Northwood Pines Assisted Living was held in April.
2011 – Ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best skilled nursing facilities in the state of Iowa.
2011 – LRH receives a deficiency free annual state survey from the Department of Inspections and Appeals.
