Admissions

What is necessary or required to admit someone to the nursing home?
You must be admitted under a doctor’s order. The doctor should be from the local area. Residents do not enter on their own. They must need a minimum level of care.

What are the levels of care provided at Lutheran Retirement Home?
Skilled Care, which is provided after a qualifying hospital stay. Skilled care is defined by the rules of the Federal Medicaid program.

Intermediate Care is conventional nursing home care. It is either paid for privately by the individual or by a state run program called Medicaid. Medicaid is administered by the Dept of Human Services (DHS). It is for those who have run out of financial resources to pay for the services privately. Other resources are available for Veterans and people with Nursing Home/Long Term Care Insurance.

Memory Care is provided in our Breen Center. These suites specialize in a low stimulus environment that provides security and safety to the residents. It is a secured unit for the safety of our residents and for those with a high risk of elopement.

What documentation will I need to provide?
  A Medicare card is required.

If the resident is a part of a prescription drug program, a Medical Supplement Card (such as Blue Cross), Medicaid card, and Pharmacy card are needed.

A Social Security card is needed, especially if there is not an "A" after the Medicare number.

A Durable Power of Attorney (DPOA) and a financial General Power of Attorney are required. The DPOA makes sharing of medical information possible, but limits our ability to share information with other family members.

Please note that documents must be provided before entry.

Costs

What is the cost associated with nursing home care?
Room and Board charges are a flat fee corresponding to the type of room rented. Additional costs include, but are not limited to, the resident’s medications, doctor visits, therapy treatments and oxygen concentrators.

Are there set hours I can visit my loved one?
Suggested hours are 9 AM to 9 PM, however guests may come at any time. We ask that you avoid mealtimes so the residents can receive proper nutrition. Many families also plan visits around the activities known to be enjoyed by the residents.

Medications

What about medications? Can I bring the prescription bottles that we have at home?
Except for residents receiving medications from the  VA, all other medications must use a unit dose system to administer the medication in an organized and controlled manner.

No over the counter meds are allowed (Tylenol, cough medicine, vitamin pills, etc) We can get these for the resident, but they must be under a doctor’s order and properly labeled and administered by our staff.

Resident Rooms

What about TV?
Residents must supply their own television set.  Cable services can be purchased through the local provider.

How is the room furnished?
The room comes with a hospital bed, nightstand, dresser and chair. There is also a closet. We encourage families to personalize the room. Families may bring their favorite chair (often a recliner) and family pictures.

What not to bring-Throw rugs, doorstops, and extension cords. Also no aerosol cans or sharp objects.

Is there a phone in the resident’s room?
Phone service is a private arrangement between the phone company and the resident or family member. If the resident does not want a phone, calls can be directed to Lutheran Retirement Home. However, no long distance outgoing calls would be allowed.
